In the Long Run, Is the GOP Dead? By Patrick J. Buchanan

Since 1928, only Dwight Eisenhower and George W. Bush have won the presidency while capturing both houses of Congress for the GOP.

In his 49-state landslide, Richard Nixon failed to take either House. In his two landslides, Ronald Reagan won back only the Senate. Yet Mitt Romney is even money to pull off the hat trick.
With this hopeful prospect, why the near despair among so many Republicans about the long term?

In his New York Times report, "In California, GOP Fights Steep Decline," Adam Nagourney delves into the reasons.

In the Golden Land, a state Nixon carried all five times he was on a national ticket and Reagan carried by landslides all four times he ran, the GOP does not hold a single statewide office. It gained not a single House seat in the 2010 landslide. Party registration has fallen to 30 percent of the California electorate and is steadily sinking.

Why? It is said that California Republicans are too out of touch, too socially conservative on issues like right-to-life and gay rights. "When you look at the population growth," says GOP consultant Steve Schmidt, "the actual party is shrinking. It's becoming more white. It's becoming older."

Race, age and ethnicity are at the heart of the problem. And they portend not only the party's death in California, but perhaps its destiny in the rest of America.

Consider. Almost 90 percent of all Republican voters in presidential elections are white. Almost 90 percent are Christians. But whites fell to 74 percent of the electorate in 2008 and were only 64 percent of the population. Christians are down to 75 percent of the population from 85 in 1990. The falloff continues and is greatest among the young.

Consider ethnicity. Hispanics were 15 percent of the U.S. population in 2008 and 7.4 percent of the electorate. Both percentages will inexorably rise.

Yet in their best years, like 2004, Republicans lose the Hispanic vote 3-to-2. In bad years, like 2008, they lose it 2-to-1. Whites are already a minority in California, and Hispanics will eventually become the majority.

Say goodbye to the Golden Land.

Asian-Americans voted 3-to-2 for Obama, black Americans 24-to-1. The Asian population in California and the nation is growing rapidly. The black population, 13 percent of the nation, is growing steadily.

Whites, already a minority in our two most populous states, will be less than half the U.S.

population by 2041 and a minority in 10 states by 2020. Consider now the Electoral College picture.

Of the seven mega-states, California, New York and Illinois appear lost to the GOP.

Pennsylvania has not gone Republican since 1988. Ohio and Florida, both crucial, are now swing states. Whites have become a minority in Texas. When Texas goes, America goes.
This year could be the last hurrah.

The GOP must work harder to win Hispanic votes, we are told. But consider the home economics and self-interest of Hispanics.

Half of all U.S. wage-earners pay no income tax. Yet that half and their families receive free education K-12, Medicaid, rent supplements, food stamps, earned income tax credits, Pell grants, welfare payments, unemployment checks and other benefits.

Why should poor, working- and middle-class Hispanics, the vast majority, vote for a party that will reduce taxes they don't pay, but cut the benefits they do receive?

The majority of Latinos, African-Americans, immigrants and young people 18 to 25 pay no income taxes yet enjoy a panoply of government benefits. Does not self-interest dictate a vote for the party that will let them keep what they have and perhaps give them more, rather than the party that will pare back what they now receive?

What are the historic blunders of the Grand Old Party that may yet appear on the autopsy report as probable causes of death?

First, the party, intimidated by name-calling, refused to stop a tidal wave of immigration that brought 40 million people here whose families depend heavily on government. We needed a time-out to assimilate them and see them move out of the tax-consuming sector of the nation.
Republicans acquiesced in the importation of a new electorate that may provide the decisive votes to send the party to the ash heap of history.

Second, Republicans, when enacting tax cuts, repeatedly dropped millions of taxpayers off the rolls, creating a huge class that contributes little to pay for the expanding cornucopia of benefits it receives.
Third, the social revolution of the 1960s captured the culture and converted much of the nation. According to a new Pew poll, the number of Americans who profess a belief in no religion at all has tripled since the 1990s and is now one in five of our countrymen.

If your racial and ethnic voter base is aging, shrinking and dying, your moral code is being rejected, and the tax-consuming class has been allowed to grow to equal or to dwarf the taxpaying class, the Grand Old Party has a problem. But then so, too, does the country.

Look at the GOP demography and ask yourself is that what represents the America people as whole? If no, then what is the core belief of the GOP leaders? Are they for the old America, before civil rights or the 21st century America that is in to fight today's fronts and wars like Stuxnet Cyber-attacks, Diplomacy and Drone? If J.F. Kennedy had acted tough as Gov. Romney is acting the severely Conservative and tough talker, we could be living the totally different world today. Gov. you can’t be someone you are not, stop craving for the residence office so bad and you can’t buy it no matter how rich you are.

Gov. Romney is against unified high tech military and wants to give pentagon money to fund projects that won’t fit today's fronts, Obama has unified and make our military swift and the veterans valuable both at home and oversees. We need to match forward and not backwards. Tax cuts, harsh hard talks that don’t crack a hardliner rather unify them against us are meaningless. The world has evolved and we have to evolve with it. Or the earth will shift beneath us. We don’t live in this earth alone and certainly we need to navigate our ways maintaining leadership strongly and politely as well. Silent sometimes is the stronger message than just loudness mouth that has little actions to offer solution rather bullying others. Romney and GOP come to realization that this is the 21st century and not the cold-war error. You can’t create old manufacturing jobs in today’s economy and competitive global markets. Rather, we can create high tech manufacturing jobs. Then Congressman Ryan and Gov. Romney stop lying to the American people that you are for American job. One thing for sure you are for your own jobs. If Obama was for his Own Jobs he could not dare to take the highest risks he has taken to protect the middle class jobs of car-manufacturing industry (Detroit), teachers, firemen, police, veterans and many more Americans or using very controversial programs to kill our enemies. Training for the new job is the deal, so don’t cut student loans/PELL grants, and don’t try to tell us that hi-tech manufacturing like high fuel efficient vehicle standards, efficient batteries, solar panels and wind powers are not good for America.

Where do you people live? In the burble do you all live? On which planet are you coming from? If Reagan resurrect today he will slap all of you for abusing his legacy and turn him into an American progress hindrance caricature. Paul Ryan voted all the Bush Spending that got us into this messy. He stood on the side line when America was losing 730,000+ jobs a month, January 2009, and him and his fellow GOP law makers made a strategy that their number one job was to make sure Obama is failing and defeat him as one term president. They did not care about American jobs or economy then, so they don’t care now. So simple, to defeat American president is to defeat the American people. GOP in this strategy has no strategic difference with China or the American’s adversaries. I wonder if they did see America under Obama the less America or the different America? Look at the words they are using “we want our country back”. Our country back from whom and where? Today Congressman Ryan is the champion of blaming Obama for the failure of the same program that benefited the nation and he blocked them. He is even adding that Obama did not clean up the messy left by him and his colleagues quickly enough so we, the American people, should give him and the GOP the presidency back because they know how to clean up faster. What are they offering? The same mess that put us into this messy from the first place, Tax cut for the millionaires and deregulated Wall-Street.

Have you ever asked yourself a question, why Super Packs gives those millions of dollars to the GOP? What are they get back in return? Military tenders and contracts through war machine. Words like Gov. Romney on drums of wars are not by mistakes, invoking Russia as worst enemy like we are in the cold war, or injecting Israel in the American politics are not accident. He want more contribution from these future contractors. Romney he is not there for you, healthcare like the one you architect as MA Governor, now, "no it will cost too much, but tax cut the Millionaires" is fine politics. How about your tax returns, "no you have no right to know that"; but "I want to be your faithful president and Obama is not the one for you". Which American people do he think he is talking to? I wonder if he understands what he is talking about. To him seeking presidency is like gambling or seeking to run the corporation like Bain Capital; there is more into it Gov. Romney, like putting the innocent American lives in danger by poorly chosen words. President Obama is tested, furthermore he killed OBL, taking it to the terrorists than any other presidents, save the economy although GOP still standing-by so as you Gov. Romney. Your money and investments are in Swiss banks and other oversees entities why shouldn’t we believe that you won’t gamble with our Social security, Medicare and Economy because you are all set? Good example, President Obama took risk on Detroit to save the American job and the national treasure, while you wanted to do it Bain Capital way, scramble it and salvage it into pieces and get your money back while communities are left fending for themselves. We think we know President Obama and you very well already and President Obama to the ordinary Americans he is the lesser of evil when come to you Gov. Romney.
